If you’re looking for a fun way to decorate glass ornaments, this DIYs are perfect for you! They’re simple and inexpensive, but the results are beautiful.
For a start…
- Choose your materials. You’ll need a variety of different colored glitters and sprinkles to make your design unique. You can also try using different colored glues or paints if you want something more colorful than just glitter.
- Pick up some glass ornaments at your local craft store or online retailer like Amazon or Etsy. You can find them in all sorts of shapes and sizes with different patterns on them so they’ll look great no matter what kind of design you want to use.
- Put some glue onto your ornament’s surface by using a toothpick or Popsicle stick (or even just a cotton swab). Wait about 30 seconds for the glue to dry before moving onto the next step so it doesn’t slide around when you add more layers.
OR
- Wash your glass ornament thoroughly with warm water and soap until all dirt is removed. Rinse well and let dry completely.
- Apply clear nail polish on the inside of the ornament if desired for extra shine and protection from breakage in the future. Let dry completely before decorating further.
- Pour glitter into a small bowl or plate and add clear nail polish to make it more adhesive if desired (this will not work with all types of glitter). Add sprinkles as desired along with glitter until you have covered your ornament fully with them (depending on how many layers you want). You can also use glue or double-sided tape if you would like to place them directly onto your ornament without using sprinkles or glitter first.
OR
- Start by drawing a snowflake pattern on your ornament. You can use any shape or size you like, but we’ve found that the classic six-sided snowflake works well for this project.
- Once you’ve drawn your design on the ornament, fill it in with glue and sprinkle glitter into it until it’s completely covered by glitter. Allow the glue to dry completely before removing the paper backing from your ornament.
- Then hang your finished ornament on your tree or give it as a gift.
OR
- Start with a clean ornament. You don’t have to remove the original paint, but it is helpful. If you have an opaque paint color under your glitter or spruce, that’s fine. If it’s a transparent color, you’ll want to start with white or clear paint around the edges of your ornament so that the glitter shows up better.
- Choose a good adhesive. Glitter and sprinkles need an adhesive to stick to your ornament. Use double-sided tape or glue dots instead of permanent glue because they’re easier to remove when you want to start over again with another design later in the season.
- Apply glitters and sprinkles carefully. It’s easy to overdo it when adding glitters — too much is not only overwhelming but also hard to remove later on if you change your mind about which design looks best on an ornament! Be sure not to cover up too much surface area or else it will look like a mess instead of something beautiful.
